Ever wondered what happens at an Eczema Outreach Support school workshop?
Wonder no more, because we have Caleb and mum Lynsey to tell all about it.
An EOS Schools Worker presented an online Workshop to Caleb’s P6 class.
The ten-year-old has struggled with eczema since he was an infant, often being inflamed, sore and very itchy. His skin would frequently become infected and he would struggle to sleep with the itching and pain.
The family heard about EOS through their dermatologist and became members.
Lynsey said: “Within days of joining we had a welcome pack through the door and Caleb was so pleased with it. He couldn’t believe there was a charity for people with eczema like him.
“We learned we could request a school workshop and went ahead, despite not knowing much about what it involved.”
EOS arranged an online school workshop with Caleb’s class. The workshop is tailored for the age of the pupils and combines education, experiments and talking about feelings.
Lynsey said: “The day he had the workshop, I asked him after school how it was and he was telling me all about it – which isn’t like him, he’s normally quite quiet.
“He said the workshop was brilliant and that they got to do experiments and learn about eczema and what causes it. He was made to feel special for having eczema, while normally it’s a negative in his life. It’s doctors appointments and injections and blood tests and pain. Having the workshop gave Caleb a boost and made him more confident in explaining what eczema is to other children.
“He felt special and included for having eczema so it’s been great for him.”
Caleb said: “The workshop was really fun and I found out some other people in my class have eczema. I really liked the moisture meter experiment to see how much moisture is in our skin and how we are all different. I think my class has been more understanding about my eczema since the workshop and I think everyone with eczema should ask their school about having a workshop.”
