We’re passionate about improving the lives of children and young people with eczema and are involved in a lot of work beyond our direct support to families. Whether it’s sharing the experiences of our members to influence eczema research, participating in relevant consultations, or improving the awareness of eczema and its impact, we’re working hard to make life better for people struggling with eczema. Find out a bit more below.
Eczema research
It’s an exciting time for eczema research, with work ongoing to improve treatments, our understanding of eczema, and ways to improve the management of the condition. We are involved in many research projects including:
Consultations
Eczema Outreach Support is involved in a range of consultations affecting families with eczema, including with the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) to assess new treatments and develop guidelines. We do this to make sure that the experiences and needs of children with eczema and their families are considered in the development of relevant treatments, services and changes in guidelines and legislation. Recent consultations have included the Scottish Government’s School Uniform Consultation and the assessment of new eczema treatments, including Upadacitinib and Abrocitinib.
Increasing awareness of eczema
Eczema affects many people (1 in 5 children and 1 in 10 adults) but is often misunderstood. We are committed to increasing awareness of eczema and ensuring people understand the reality for many living with the condition. We work on a global scale, and as part of a global alliance called Global Skin, work to raise awareness of skin conditions.
Sharing our model
We work with other organisations to share our work and learn from others for the benefit of our members and those of other third sector organisations.
Projects
Surface Echoes – a creative project to amplify the voices of people living with eczema
Surface Echoes is a resource that was developed over three years with input from creative professionals, arts and health researchers, working in partnership with individuals affected by eczema. It brings to life the everyday challenges and emotional impact of eczema and has resulted in resources that aim to create empathy, spark conversation, and deepen understanding of the realities of living with eczema.
